Since its inception in 1997, Graydon Manor Day School has provided a therapeutic, educational environment for students that cannot meet the demands and expectations of a larger traditional school model. The program, of no more than 30 students, is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education. It serves youth identified as having serious emotional disturbances, specific learning disabilities, or other health impairments. Additionally, the program is accredited through the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF).

The school provides academic instruction for grades 6-12, in conjunction with strong therapeutic support to assist students in successfully addressing their individual educational, social/emotional, and developmental goals. Through a consistent, structured learning environment students in the Graydon Manor Day School learn strategies and coping skills that can allow them to meet one of our goals: A successful transition back to a public school setting.

Students are referred to Graydon Manor Day School through local educational agencies, family physicians, and therapists. Additionally, the Day School staff provides therapeutic supports including:

·         Individual counseling

·         Small group counseling

·         Family counseling

·         In-home visitation

·         Anger management training

·         Problem solving

·         Social skills development

Students also receive academic instruction with an emphasis on meeting individual learning goals. Many students require extra support in one or more areas of their academic knowledge base. Teachers and classroom counselors work in small groups and one-on-one settings to help all students meet their personal academic goals. Instruction is provided in the following subjects:

·         Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus)

·         English/Language arts (Literature, Grammar, and Composition)

·         Science (Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physical Sciences)

·         Social Studies (World & U.S. History and Government)

·         Health and Physical Education

·         Basic Skills

·         Social Skills

·         Introduction to Business

·         Foreign Language

Additionally, the Day School provides a program of Work Study for 11th and 12th grade students, incorporating academic instruction with half-day employment in local businesses. This provides students with real-life work experiences prior to graduation. Summer school opportunities and extended school day services for students who need to complete additional credits towards graduation are also offered. All Graydon Manor Day School teachers are licensed through the Commonwealth of Virginia. For further information contact the Director of Education.
